Football parties, Halloween gatherings, easy dinners in a rush that make everybody in the family happy – it is definitely time for some Hot Ham and Cheese Sandwiches with Boar’s Head SmokeMaster™ Black Forest Ham !  These come together in a flash and have lots of customizable options satisfy anybody.  Nobody will leave hungry after a pan of these come out of the oven!

Hot ham sandwiches with cheese are dressed up with caramelized onions, pesto, olive tapenade or sun dried tomatoes. They make perfect party food or dinner!

Over the years I have given my husband wonderful gifts. However, I’m pretty sure the only gifts he remembers are his tungsten wedding ring, a 5 pound chunk of prosciutto, and a Boar’s Head salami.

The ring endures in memory because he broke it a few hours after we got married. The salami endures because it was his first Boar’s Head meat and instantly his favorite salami.

In our house, a quality piece of meat is a treasured gift and much sought after meal times. Personally, I’m quite picky about deli meat. Mashing up something tasteless and compressing it into a loaf will not convince me it is food.

After the salami incident we tried the Boar’s Head SmokeMaster™ Black Forest Ham. This is not run of the mill meat from your grocer’s deli counter. This is excellence for your table! The ham is roasted to perfection and smoked with beechwood imported from Germany. The result is a light smoky flavor that melts on your tongue.

This fall we all have about a million activities that require food. It is in fact one of my favorite things about food! First football season rolls out, then Halloween parties where we need something besides sugar, and finally the holiday season kickoff – THANKSGIVING!!! (Yes it is my favorite). In-between the parties our schedules get busy and sometimes you just need to get dinner on the table in a hurry.

These delectable Hot Ham and Cheese sandwiches fit the bill for all occasions! I give you the basic format, but you pick your favorite cheese and toppings! I like mine with seasoned butter, smoked gouda and caramelized onions. Jonathan’s favorite is the mustard poppy seed butter with Swiss and some yummy olive tapenade. In theory you could make every single sandwich in the pan a different way.

For a party I like to make each row with a different cheese. For dinner I lay out the toppings and cheeses and everybody puts theirs together before I pop the pan in the oven. The only problem is keeping the delicious ham out of people’s mouths long enough to get it on the sandwiches.

I’m excited to hear what versions of this you love! Leave a comment and let me know.

If you are in a hurry by all means grab a bag of your favorite buns at the store.   I like to take the extra time to bake my own rolls for this recipe to give the sandwiches a little something extra!  These easy diner rolls are the ones pictured in this ham sandwich recipe.  I know you will love them too!

These Copycat Texas Roadhouse Dinner Rolls are amazingly soft and the Cinnamon Honey Butter puts them over the top! Only 10 minutes of active work!

Ingredients
For the Mustard and Poppy Seed Butter Topping
  • ¾ cup salted butter, very soft
  • 1½ Tbsp. Dijon mustard
  • 1½ tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1½ Tbsp. poppy seeds
  • 1 Tbsp. dehydrated minced onion
For The Sandwiches
Sandwich Condiments
  • caramelized onions
  • olive tapenade
  • pesto
  • sun dried tomatoes, minced
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Butter a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Slice rolls in half and lay the bottoms in the pan. Place a layer of cheese, then a layer of ham, and then a layer of cheese until the meat of cheese are portioned out.
  3. On top of the cheese add whatever condiments you desire. I suggest one or two options for each sandwich. Place the top of rolls on the sandwiches.
  4. To make the sauce, combine the butter, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, poppy seeds and dehydrated onion.
  5. Spoon sauce over the rolls. Cover with foil and bake in a preheated oven for 20 - 25 minutes until the sandwiches are hot through and the cheese is melted.
Notes
Note: The mustard is not a strong flavor in the sauce. Some people / kids can't even tell it is there. We like to make some with mustard poppy seed butter topping and some with a seasoned butter topping. I have provided both recipes as separate printables so you can mix and match to suit yourself.
